Biodynamic apple and kiwi plantation on 19.5 ha with Demeter, Abcert and GRASP certification

Sustainable biodynamic apple and kiwi plantation with approx. 13.5 ha of cultivation area for Granny Smith with Demeter, Abcert and GRASP certification and approx. 4 ha of newly established cultivation area for yellow kiwi fruit subject to a strict licensing procedure. This unique Demeter plantation is located in the province of Udine in north-eastern Italy, only 20 km from the sea and at the same time only 20 km from the mountains. The warm, calcareous and stony soils provide an ideal microclimate for optimal fruit development.
The plantations are enclosed and protected by 4.20 m high fine-meshed hail nets as well as lateral netting. Only apples that are ripe enough to eat and have a balanced sugar-acid ratio are harvested. The Brix value of the organic apples is 1-2° above the standard. The newly planted yellow kiwi fruit will be in full production from 2025. Furthermore, there is an option for licences on a further approx. 8 ha of yellow kiwifruit cultivation area, which is expected to increase the EBITDA of the whole farm to approx. EUR 700,000 per year, so that a very attractive return can be earned on the capital invested.
The farm practices biodynamic fruit growing according to the latest technical and ecological knowledge, with consistent use of renewable energy. The holistic Demeter standards require not only the renunciation of synthetic fertilisers, chemical pesticides and artificial additives in further processing, but also the targeted promotion of life processes in the soil and in the food. Due to the complete coverage of the plantation, a microcosm with the most diverse insects and animal species has formed. An additional approx. 4 ha of leased land is used for grazing sheep in free-range husbandry in order to comply with Demeter regulations in terms of biodiversity.
The buildings of the farm offer about 380 m² with storage rooms, office and dining room on the ground floor and 2 flats upstairs. There is a dormitory for harvesters with 20 beds. The plantation has a sensor-controlled irrigation system for fertilisation, surface and drip irrigation and a modern frost protection system. A photovoltaic system of about 350 m² as well as 3 wells with a total of 240 litres/sec and 2 pumps ensure the sustainable production of this special biodynamic apple and kiwi plantation.
